Hello,

It's shaping up to be a fine bank holiday weekend and we've got a bounty of seasonal treats so you can enjoy the sun in culinary style.

The first apples are ready to pick at Jacob's Farm in Essex. Judged to be sufficiently plump and ripe they will be with us on Friday. But don't worry, it's not quite the end of summer yet. These are early season varieties that don't herald the arrival of autumn. We'll have big, juicy Grenadier cookers and crisp, sharp Discovery eaters. Both are great for juicing and we're offering bulk buy deals for this. Carrot and apple juice with a dash of ginger is a winner at this time of year. A rhubarb and apple compote is another favourite of mine.

We're expecting a good apple harvest this year after a cold winter and fine weather during flowering provided the perfect conditions for a bumper crop. We have plenty more interesting varieties to look forward to as the season progresses.

The fruit section is filling up nicely now and we can add Kentish Victoria plums to the list. These are lovely eaten fresh and also excel as a culinary plum. With apples, blackberries and plums available I can already smell the pies and crumbles baking in the oven.

The chillies went down a storm last week and this week we are offering ring of fire, gusto and jalapeno chillies as well as a mixed selection. Read more below about what to expect from each.

Perry Court bolster our organics range with red battavia lettuces, tomatoes, pak choi and runner beans, all new this week.

We're gearing up for the game season which will be in full swing by October. For now, we have woodpigeon breasts and a game pie mix and we expect to have Andy's venison in next week.

We're massive fans of Gavin's Purely Pesto, handmade in Suffolk. Pick up a pot this bank holiday weekend and make the most of our offer. Don't limit yourself to using them with pasta alone. They make fantastic marinades, turn a humble slice of cheese on toast into a fine delicacy and go really well with fish.

Finally, Andy's sausage of the week is worth a mention as this week they include tomatoes and chillies grown on the farm. Fresher sausage fillings you are unlikely to find!
All the best,
Sam and the Farm Direct team.

Know your Chillies
It's wise to have an idea about the heat of each chilli to avoid any unexpected surprises so here's a quick guide to the varieties we have this week.
Ring of Fire: the name gives it away. A hot chilli to use with caution that will add a feisty punch to a dish. With a thin skin they dry very well too so are a great choice if you want to stock up.
Gusto: an aesthetically pleasing deep purple chilli with a medium amount of heat. A more suitable choice for those that don't like too much heat.
Jalapeno: a mild chilli that can be eaten whole.
Wonderful Woodpigeon
There is no close season for woodpigeon as it is a plentiful bird but we like to give it a rest whilst the rest of our game is off limits. We bring it back this week as we approach the beginning of the game season proper. Woodpigeon ticks all the boxes for sustainable, locally sourced meat. And their diverse diet of things like acorns, berries and seeds gives them a wonderfully complex flavour. So if you're yet to try game woodpigeon is a good place to start.
